Phokwane Heads
Association: Who is Glitz TarBayb and how did you get the name?
Glitz TarBayb : My
name is Thabang Boihang and I’m from Pampierstad. I got the name TarBayb(Thababy)
from my old friend Japson. “Jappie”
would visit me regularly after school and because my mother loved to call me
“Baby”, my friend merged “Thabang” with “Baby” to result “Thababy”(written:
TarBayb). As for “Glitz” I got the name from a random chick at City of
Matlosana after I performed at the “Street Festival”. She approached me to
describe how my performance was, using the word “glitz” and her friends
misunderstood her, they thought she said I am “Glitz”, and since then, it has
never been the same, I ran with the name.
PHA: And by the way, what influenced
you to pursue hip-hop career?
Glitz TarBayb : Anger
came over after the loss of my brother Wala in 1999, and it pulled me through.
I couldn’t look back, I was told he was poisoned and that developed something I
couldn’t bear within me knowing that someone out there took a life of my role
model. No one could understand what I was going through, my voice was lower to
be heard, I was a little boy who had to do something. I wrote everything down
and in progress I heard “Silent murder” by “Nas” and the song changed
everything, influenced me to turn what’s bothering me into a song and that was
the beginning of everything.
PHA: Ok, but why rapping in Setswana?
Glitz TarBayb : Because
I am a Tswana and I feel comfortable in my own skin but I switches into English
every second.
PHA: So can you please
tell us why such a long absence and where have you been?
Glitz TarBayb : You’ll
remember that in this industry you need people to boost your growth, I mean
without them you are nothing. There were times when I thought of quitting because the was a
lack of support in my hood(Pampierstad), but I realized I’m doing the very big
mistake because I have a family to feed and a daughter who’s looking up to me and
I was like “what am I teaching her?” “Am I teaching her to become a quitter?” “Ooh
hell no, this is not me”, that’s why I am turning up, this is me, I am not back
I’ve been here this is a turn up.”
PHA: Wow!!! Please
continue . . .
Glitz TarBayb : I
mean it feels like it was only yesterday that I started writing, I am running
with plenty of fresh ideas and I think I need to start taking risks from now on
because this is a win or lose situation, why limits? We only live once, and I
won’t consider quitting as an option anymore. We are about to begin.
PHA: Oh yes, can you
please tell us about your new song, turn up?
Glitz TarBayb : There
is nothing much to say about it, the words speaks for itself. It’s like an
introduction song that is meant to re-introduce me and my new sound. As an old
school learner and the new school teacher it draws the best outta me, feels
like I’m merged. With a trap beat(current sound) along lyrics that says “ha ke rata nka tlola/ to show-off bo Pantsula/”
such will take you way back.
PHA: Talking about
influences, what shaped you?
Glitz TarBayb : It
will be unfair to mention names but it all started in the ‘90s, those Christmas
days, the lifestyle, creativity, the vibe, the feeling, the flavour, the
colours, - There was kwaito, pop, reggae, ambhaqhanga & etc. I mean everything was awesome back then than now. Since I can’t
bring that back, it’s with a great mindset to move on and create new things.
PHA: Do you have a
team behind you? Where do you get the support?
Glitz TarBayb : Bronx
Crew Production has been there, I’ve just found you(laughs), I’ve just found
Pampierstad Heads Association, no members yet, we are about to recruit and as
for Glitz Spirit, we all know it’s been there and as I said is just the
beginning, bigger things to pop outta it.
PHA: You’re one of
the few hip-hop artist who seem to take his craft very serious. What matters
the most in you rap and how do you stay ahead of your game?
Glitz TarBayb : Every
rap component is very important to me. My flow is out of this world I’m telling,
content always matters, I’m always spitting bars to touch one and as for the
delivery . . . I use different tones to mesmerize. I am that MC who define
himself as “a conscious rapper on commercial level” and I nearly forgot, I can also battle, I’m a full package.
PHA: And talking about
your flow, how did it develop?
Glitz TarBayb : I
always try to differentiate myself from the rest, so I wanted to be a pioneer
of my sound and I think for not intimidating others gave me a chance to focus
on being me, to develop my own and to find myself, and hearing Khuli Chana made
an impact to the development of my flow.
PHA: Going into the
future, what’s your state of mind, coming from a disappointment and unfortunate
run?
Glitz TarBayb : (Laughs)
I don’t want to sound like i'm preaching but since it’s my responsibility also, I want you to know
this “I have seen a new earth and the first earth had passed away”, this is the
whole new book, everything is new, I mean life is about bad and good
experiences so we just have to acknowledge everything and move on.
PHA: What to expect
from you from now on?
Glitz TarBayb : I
have a vision I’m not screwed yet, i will be dropping my first music video
ever, do my own shows as I’m busy planning to do a “one man” show, you will get
to see the new faces around me, I mean the list just goes on and on. In fact
let’s wait and see . . .
PHA: Can you tell us
about your vision?
Glitz TarBayb : I’m still the same, I’ve just changed how I
should play the game. I’m not going to be predictable.
PHA: Which local hip
hop artist do you like?
Glitz TarBayb : It
depends, does have departments. Pampierstad - Punch-illah and Sfeezy does it
for me and Khuli Chana is my boss in Africa.
PHA: What’s the
biggest highlight of your career?
Glitz TarBayb : Performing
with HHP.
PHA: Is there a
special lady in your life?
Glitz TarBayb : Yes
PHA: Can you describe
a woman you prefer?
Glitz TarBayb : Not
a faint hearted woman because I work in an industry that is not for one. She
has to always remember that I’m not just Thabang but Glitz TarBayb, a musician
for people. Making me smile , is what I need from her forever.
PHA: Any book you are
reading?
Glitz TarBayb : Bible
PHA: What can you say
to the people who want to quit out there?
Glitz TarBayb : “Patience
is part of the journey therefore important things takes time.” – by Glitz
TarBayb
